Flooding is the number one disaster in the United States.  The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has a variety of resources to aid property owners in identifying and understanding their flood risk.  Everyone lives in an area with some flood risk.  Flood zones are indicated in a community's flood map.

The National Weather Service (NWS) defines flash flooding as a flood caused by heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time, generally less than 6 hours.  Flash floods occur when heavy rainfall exceeds the ability of the ground to absorb it, or when enough water accumulates for streams to overtop their banks, causing rapid rises of water in a short amount of time.  Flash floods are the most dangerous kind of floods.
