Message from the Mayor
Elizabeth Wallace started serving the poor in Hendersonville in 1972, eventually taking on the role of full-time social worker for the Community Pastors Association’s Neighborhood Center. A couple months ago she told me about her great uncle, Eugene Washington, a veteran or World War I. Born in 1894, he was old enough to fight in the war and later returned to his home near Rockland Road. He lived there and worshiped at Rockland Baptist Church until his death in 1972. Elizabeth showed me an aged portrait of Eugene. One of our local businesses, All About Art, repaired the photo and reframed it. Yesterday I delivered the restored photo and new frame to her. A framed copy of the photo will hang in City Hall.
